Smetimes, your favorite catchphrase is the one that comes back and bites you in the butt. That seems to be the case for Game of Thrones, which just ended its sixth season with a definitive message: winter is finally here.
Winter’s impending arrival has been an ominous warning that’s been repeated since Season 1, back before all hell broke loose. But none of us ever stopped to consider how the literal season’s eventual takeover would affect the show itself—specifically, its shooting schedule. On a UFC-centric podcast, Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently discussed the season to come and delivered what might be s a small blow to fans: Season 7 probably won’t premiere in April.
Why the late start? Apparently, in order to make Westeros’s winter look wintery, it’s best to avoid shooting in sunny weather. Who knew?
Benioff and Weiss explained that to keep their aesthetic nice and brisk, they've “kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim, gray weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot.”
They didn’t specify how much later we’re talking, but Game of Thrones’s premieres have been trending later and later for the past several seasons anyway. Season 3 debuted March 31, 2013; Season 4 premiered on April 6, 2014; Season 5 came on April 12, 2015; and this year, Season 6 premiered on April 24.
We already know that the show’s final few seasons will be shorter than 10 episodes apiece, which might make news of a delayed premiere an even bigger bummer for some fans—although perhaps this means that the show will still air its next finale at around the same time of year it always has. Regardless, if the seasons to come keep doling out the drama the way Season 6’s finale did, fans are in for a captivating rollercoaster—even if it does take a little longer to land.
