Game of Thrones theory links Jon Snow and Meera

A Game of Thrones fan theory long regarded as far-fetched has gained some traction with viewers since the finale of season six, with many believing Jon Snow and Meera Reed are twins.
There have been competing theories about Jon's mystery sibling since season two, when Daenerys Targaryen entered the House of the Undying and experienced a number of visions, including one of her brother, Rhaegar, saying: "The dragon has three heads."

The three-headed dragon motif appears in various ways throughout Game of Thrones history: Daenerys has three dragons (Rhaegal, Drogon, and Viserion); the Targaryen house symbol features a three-headed dragon, and Dany's ancestor Aegon Targaryen conquered Westeros with his two sisters, all mounted on dragons.
Fans have interpreted this to mean Daenerys's three dragons need three riders for her to win back the Iron Throne. Assuming Daenerys is one of them, who are the other two?
Now that we are almost certain that he has Targaryen blood, it seems Jon Snow will be one of the riders. As for the third, one theory suggests he has a twin sister, Meera, although another says he has a brother, Tyrion Lannister. So what evidence is there for each of the theories?
The latest season saw Bran experience a series of visions about his aunt Lyanna, who in the past was captured and raped by Rhaegar Targaryen and gave birth to a child. We saw Ned Stark defeat three Targaryen guards in order to breach The Tower of Joy, where Lyanna lay dying. A later vision revealed how Lyanna handed Ned a baby, assumed to be Jon Snow. The only other person with Ned was Howland Reed, who is also Meera's father.

While we haven't seen a second child yet, fans believe Lyanna gave birth to Jon's younger sibling moments after. The "Meera theory" suggests that Ned, who had to pretend Jon was his son to protect him, would have found it difficult to pass off two children as his own and so asked Howland to take the second child.
Meera was born in the same year as Robb and Jon, say fans, and she is still around while her brother, Jojen, was killed off two years ago, something the writers remind us of shortly before the big Jon/baby reveal. And finally, as many commentators point out, Meera and Jon do have remarkably similar hair.
But what about Tyrion? The most compelling piece of evidence for this premise emerged this season, when the youngest Lannister sibling entered the Meereen dungeon and communicated with Daenerys's dragons to emerge unscathed. It takes a Targaryen to tame a dragon, the theory goes, so Tyrion must be a Targaryen and therefore Jon's twin brother.
Tyrion's mother, Joanna, was rumoured to have slept with Aerys Targaryen and the final words of Tyrion's father, Tywin, were: "You're no son of mine."
The show's writers like to keep fans guessing and until season seven of HBO's drama is released - or until George RR Martin publishes his latest novel in the series guessing is all fans can do.
